I am a pro track athlete. I have been watching Phil hartman since snl. His death was very hard for me. I never new him but his comedy made me laugh. In my lonely track world his laughter helped me make it. I have tapes and tapes of snl and my favorite NEWSRADIO. My friends tell me i am crazy but i loved the man. May God bless his soul in heaven.
In my mind, Philip Edward Hartman was the greatest comedian actor who ever lived. His ability to make people laugh, cry, or even raise an eyebrow was outstandingly great. As a young actor, I have looked to Phil as a role model, even after his death. I used to dream that one day I could have the honorable chance of meeting him, to ask him all the very important questions. "How is the famed life?" and "How can you make people laugh all day long?" The main thing is, Phil was a hero, and never will be forgotten.
PHIL ROCKS THE HOUSE! He was one of the funniest men alive I think... It's at times like this when you are so sad that you do not know how to write how you feel. If you can read this... you are an inspiration.
Phil-Over here you've made a lot of people laugh--sure that you didn't need me to tell you that. Just as you've inspired many others here, I am certain you are inspiring others up there as well. Wishing you are enjoying yourself now.
Ah...Almost a year. I remember the absolute shock at hearing of Phil's death. Now, I treasure and tape his every appearance. I scrounge for Troy McClure Simpsons. In fact, last week there was the one where the Phil Hartman character convinces Springfield to buy a monorail. I love his old SNL work, and I tape every episode I see with him in it. Whenever I see him say "Live from New York..." a chill goes down my spine, as I realie how much I miss his work. Finally, my local station started carrying syndicated NewsRadio reruns, and that one where Bill MacNeal gets committed (with Jon Lovitz) was on, and I cracked up. Goodbye, my friend, goodbye. You're funnier now than ever, Phil. -- Tim Louman-Gardiner
Almost a year... even though it hurts me to think about your tragic death, I laugh just thinking about all your wonderous talent! I feel like I've lost a family member as I ready my May 28 candle. May the bread be with you Phil. Bread GOOD! Phil Fans, E-mail me!!! I'd love to chat!
I miss Phil a lot and I really loved him. He was one of my best actor and comedian. He was like one of my close relatives. I'm gonna miss you Phil, but I will never forget you.
Phil was the best thing that ever happened to me. He was like the father I never had. I loved him so much...then that fateful thursday I came home and got online...only to so "Comedian Phil Hartman found dead" The moment I read that I burst into tears. I cried for three and a half days. Phil was my love. I love you Phil, please come back. Love, Mal
Phil was a comic genius, and was only fully appreciated by many until after his tragic death. I cried when I heard the news, and all through both the SNL tribute and the Newsradio special. Phil was hilarious on SNL, and I always watch reruns. Newsradio hasn't been close to the same since his death and he is sorely missed. Rest in Peace, Phil, everyone loved you.
i never knew who he was until he was already dead. then somehow i started watching repeats of snl and old newsradio and he was amazingly funny. i wish he was still here to make funny shows
Phil Hartman, you were a loving father, a caring husband, a great comedian, and I'm sure a great friend... Whatever possessed Brynn to do the things that she did, please find it in your heart to forgive her... We'll miss you dude. -----Just remember, there is a little bit of Phil Hartman in every one of us
Since Phil designed album covers for CSN, Poco, and America, why not call up your favorite rock station on May 28 (the day Phil died) and request they play something off of one of the albums? I bet Phil would really dig it.
Phil-you were one of the true geniuses of comedy. You are dearly missed for your warmth as well as your humor. I watch reruns of Newsradio nightly and still can't believe your gone. At least I know that the hereafter is a little more humorous with your presence. Matt Borremans
You may know me from such e-mails as "You look sexy in Pink", "Are you staying the Night" and "I can't beleive how hairy your legs are."--My little interpertation of Troy McClure from "The Simpons", ha, ha. --We all love you Phil, your heart was big enough for everyone, and maybe that's why you were so great at everything you did. NewsRadio is awesome, just recently I have become a huge fan of the show. Also thanks for the making of this webpage, it is great to see people keep his spirit alive, he would have liked it too.
It has been almost a year since his tragic death and I still can't believe that Phil's gone. He was probably the funniest person to ever walk this earth. He made "Newsradio" my favorite show and made movies like "Sgt. Bilko" great. There are times that feel depressed, and I will simply think of something Phil did on "Newsradio" and I will instantly feel happier. Phil, you were a great guy, and you will be missed!!!
I never really cared much for him until I heard about his death. I loved newsradio before, and I loved all the characters, but after the news reported his death, I started to pay attention to whenever I saw him on screen. He just struck me as this guy that anyone and everyone loves. He certainly had a lovable charisma. And honestly, he was my favorite actor/charactor in newsradio. I scrounged around for his earlier work, and it's marvelous. Anything he works on, it's like he loves to do it. I would have loved to meet him. I usually don't care much about celebrity deaths, but Phil Hartman just touched me tremendously.
I'm from Argentina and I have to say that Phil was loved by many here too. Although I didn't get to know anything about his personal life until he died, I'm reading everything I can about Phil Hartman's life, and discovering him as the great person he seemed to be. Rest in peace Phil, you certainly deserve it.
What a beautiful tribute to Phil !! *smile* - May He Rest In Peace !! My "theory" is - Only The Good Die Young !!! Thanx for the laughs, Phil, for the 9 years, and Thanx for the memories !!!

With Phil's passing, it just makes you realise that you don't know what you've got until it's gone. I took his gift for granted, I think everyone did. But no-one knew it would dissappear like it did. From now on, I'm appreciating everything more than I ever did before. Thank you Phil, from the bottom of my heart, for the precious and humourous moments you provided us with. You will never be forgotten.
I just found this place, so excuse the delay. I think the best thing about Phil was that he seemed like a regular guy. If I ever met a celebrity, I'd probably be really uncomfortable, but if I had met Phil, I think I'd feel at ease because he seemed to have that calm about him. For those who knew him, it must have been a real honor. I always wanted to meet him, or write, but I put it off, so now unfortunatley I totally missed out. But I'll have my chance one day, I'm sure. I like to think he was incredibly spiritual. My regards to all his friends and family and fans. I know we'll never forget him, ever.
Phil Hartman is one of the best actors and comedians around in the world. I liked Mr. Hartman on "Saturday Night Live" and when he did the voices of Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz. He was both funny characters on the "Simpsons" cartoon FOX series.

Thank you Mr. Hartman for the memories!! You will never be forgotten!!
phil- if you are reading this up in heaven, to where i know you made it, i would like to say on behalf of the american public that you have touched us all deeply wheather through your comedy or role as a speaker and as long as i'm alive you will never be forgotten.
Phil, Thank you for all of those happy times that filled my heart with joy. Thank you for making me laugh when no one else could, for making me feel batter after a rough day. Thank you for being there through your shows and through your many faces and characters. Everyone will defenitely miss you because of all your great qualities and just because you were always YOU. I relly dont know what else to say because just thinking of you leaves me speechless. Just know that you will be forever remebered, loved, missed, and that we will always laugh at everything you worked so hard on to make all people everywhere laugh and be happy even if it was just for the while you were on TV. With all my love.......
Phil hartman always made me laugh. I remember him mostly on SNL but most recently on Newsradio, my favorite show. He played a great Bill McNeil and a Bill Clinton.
Phil was a funny man, who will be missed by all, a life that was taken too soon, unfairly. I wrote a poem years ago and I would like to dedicate it to Phil: "THE BEGINNING OF THE END" How much time do we have? / To laugh, to cry, to feel, to live. / No one knows that answer: / An unanswered Question? / We all go on, through everyone's end. / Not realizing that ours too will end one day. / You pray for that extra minute of life: / Hoping - maybe, that day will never come. But, it does. / Like the change of the seasons; / Each season ends, then starts a new. / But, each season does return. / Like the leaves that fall from the trees; / Where do they go? / The snow that was once on the ground, comes back. / At a different time and place. / Birth is the return of Death. / One day a baby is held by it's Mother, / could be us from days gone by. / But, at a different time and place, / to laugh, to cry, to feel, to live... Again! See you soon Phil Hartman. Sincerely, David L. Mick vacshac1@webtv.net
I have grown up watching SNL and the fact that the death of cast members past or present can affect so many people in so many ways is unbelieveable. I have grown up watching phil and chris farley do their matt foley's and there frank sinatra's. It's so nice to see these old episodes on comedy central
Phil, I don't know where you are or if you can read this, but you were, in my opinion, the greatest comic of all time. The world became a sadder place with your departure. I may not be all that important in the big scheme of things, but I still wish I had been able to let you know how much I appreciated your comedy while you were still with us. Even after all this time, my eyes still mist up when I think of how you have been lost to the world. God bless you.
Phil Hartman. The comedian. I never saw him personally but he was damn funny!!!! My favourite movie with him starring in it was probably Small Soldiers. My favourite T.V. series with him is definately NEWSRADIO. I qoute "You are one great big MAGNIFICENT hunk of man meat." Anyway, goodbye, "Friend"
Phil Hartman was a very funny man. He brought a smile to my face in every TV show and movie he made. Now that he is gone he will be missed. When I think about how he is no longer with us it doesn't bring a smile to my face. But he will always be remembered; not as another great actor who has passed away, but as someone who brought a smile to my face, and many others.
I made a video tribute to Phil that I want everyone to see. Please go to http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/8808/goodbye.html You need RealPlayer G2 to view it but it is a free download. Thanks all. Miss you forever Phil.
Phil, you are truly loved and missed by millions. We've loved you since your early days of Cap'n Karl with Pee Wee. You are the man of a thousand voices. It is with heavy hearts that we must remember you and your bodies of work. May God bless you and welcome you into heaven where you'll be entertaining those who have gone on for all eternity. WE LOVE YOU PHIL!!!!!

I really don't know what to say about Phil. Except that he was the funniest man alive, the world will never be the same without him. I guess all I can say now about the person whom was the only reason I watched SNL is hope you are resting in peace, and that you know that you will always be in our hearts. Goodbye.
Thank you Phil Hartman! You were truly a comic genius and a true star of North American comedy. Another BRILLIANT Canadian. I think about your routines and characters all the time as I'm sure everyone does. Your body of work will be a joy for many generations to come.
Mr. Hartman, I am sure I speak for all loyal SNL viewers when I say that you have touched the world's hearts with your work, and that you will be sorely missed. I know that I personally have followed you from SNL through to Newsradio and have thought that you always got even funnier, if that was possible, as you progressed through your illustrious yet abrubtly ended career. Thanks a million, from all of your loyal fans, and myself.
Wow, what can I say about a man who turned everything he touched to gold? He was an awsome talent, and no one else could ever compare to him. He was the one that made NewsRadio what it is and it is not the same without him. I started watching NewsRadio the night it debuted and ever since then my family and I were hooked. I remember watching an early episode with my father, it was what we call the "smoking" episode. It's where Mathew complains about Bill's smoking, so Dave makes a deal with Bill that would he give up coffee and Bill would have to give up smoking. Anyway, it's a classic episode that is forever emblazed in my head. If you ever run across it in reruns I encourage you to watch. I promise you will LOVE it! Well anyway, when I was watching CNN on the morning of May 28 and heard Phill Hartman had died I was totally shellshocked. I felt as though a family member had died. Maybe it was because I grew up watching him on SNL, or maybe it was because he reminded me of people I knew, but I know part of it was the fact that he was a person I wish I had been able to know or at least been able to see in person doing what he did best -- making people laugh -- including me. I would killed to have seen him in person for a taping of NewsRadio. He was an incredibly talented actor. I think he was just starting to hit his peak, and it's very sad that we will never know what was to come of him. He was and always be a role-model to me. So to Phil, wherever you are, we miss your humor, your spirit, and your smile. No one is able to make us laugh like you did. And I thank you for making me laugh all those times. Even though he is not here physically, his spirit was left behind. He lives on in reruns. WE MISS AND YA LOVE PHIL. YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN
I was watching an old movie the other night, "The Three Amigos," in which Phil made a cameo appearance that I did not know was in the movie. I was struck by the fact that in his relatively brief life he had done so much work in the movies and TV. His life continues to bring happiness to his audience. However, it is indeed a tragedy that he could not have gone on to do even more. Being the man he obviously was, he would want us to remember the happiness and the laughter that was Phil Hartman. I envy the angels.
I am still shocked about the tragic circumstances of Phil Hartman's death. I regret the fact that I was just beginning to appreciate his comic genius a few months before he died. News Radio just isn't the same anymore. There is a vacant spot in the cast that will never be filled. I miss him so much. It hurts even to watch The Simpsons and hear his many voices. He was so brilliant and he was unfairly torn from our world. We are all so lucky to have witnessed his comedic performances while he was still with us. I will never get over this loss completely. That day is forever embedded in my mind (May 28, 1998)

Phil you are/were the heart and soul of newsradio. They really miss you and all of your fans miss you. Hope you're all good wherever you are.
Dear Phil, Wherever you are up there, I wrote a poem for you. Here it is: You made me laugh, you made me smile, My smile soon faded when I learned of your tragedy, I wept tears but now they are dry, Because I know you fly over us, watching us, Until the day we die, so we can meet you. GOD, WERE YOU GREAT!!! I really loved this website, and it really touched me. I have enjoyed Phil's great work on SNL and Newsradio, and I am sure that I will never forget him. Rest In Peace Phil, I'm sure wherever you are, you are in the place you most deserve.
I have been following Phil Hartman's career from his first start on SNL until his last episode of NewsRadio. What a guy, and man, what a sense of humor. Millions of laughs were caused by his great personality and character acting. And, for anyone who knows what I mean, "Soylent Green is people! It's people!"
Everyone still misses Phil Hartman. I know I do. Every time I see a re-run of The Simpsons or Newsradio on TV it makes me sad because it reminds me that he's gone but he will always be in our hearts and he will always be looked after.
I would simply like to say that I am still a huge Phil
Hartman fan. I will also admit that I did in fact cry the
day my best friend came over and told me what had happened that
morning. He was a wonderful man and will truly, truly be
missed. No, we will never have him back, but he did leave
us with an incredible amount to enjoy.

I was reading the tribute given. I too saw the SNL where he was in tears because of the birth of his child. It shows how much he valued life. He made life happier with the laughs. Me and my boyfriend watch NewsRadio (syndicated) every night and its hard to believe that he is gone. Missing you, Phil!
I never saw Phil Hartman, only heard his characterizations on The Simpsons. As an actor myself, I'd like to say that what I heard I admired tremendously. More than anything he retained the ability to surprise you. He was never predictable. So now I'm missing someone I've never even seen let alone known! Another surprise...

I just wanna say thanks Phil. You made everyone just that much happier with your funny voices and various characters on the Simpsons. The laughter you gave to us all can never be expressed in words alone. Who knows, maybe I'll see you up there sometime down the road... Thanks
I had a dream of Phil I want to relate. First I want to say that I don't know if anyone out there believes in psychic stuff or not but my good christian grandmother used to have psychic dreams and it seems that so do I. Anyhow, I dreamed that I was walking through a corridor at NewsRadio when I saw Phil kneeling down next to a little boy of about 8. He had his hands on his shoulders and was talking softly to him. I overheard him say "I died so you could be born. You have a great and wonderful gift, make sure you use it!" I had the distinct impression that the "gift" he was speaking of was all that Phil possessed in his heart, now transferred to this child for him to carry on Phil's work. Everything that Phil was was placed into this little child. I know it sounds strange but I want to thank Phil for sharing this with me and helping to ease my mind about why this had to happen to such a good man. I am making the pilgrimage to Emerald bay on Catalina Island this May 28th (where his ashes are scattered) to say thanks for everything, I love you and rest in peace. You were the best friend that I never met. May your light shine down on us all forever. Visit my webpage dedicated to Phil at http://www.angelfire.com/ny2/hauntedheart/
I only knew him through The Simpsons, Newsradio, Small Soldiers, Sgt. Bilko & Second Civil War, but he always made me laugh. He was a good (funny) man. Good bye PHIL HARTMAN.
Phil was one of the funniest guys there ever was and probably ever will be. He is a part of me and my boyfriend's daily routine. We go to school, hang out and then we watch the reruns of News Radio from 12-1am. We both love him and he will be a major part of comedy history for always. We love you phil. God keep you, brynn, and your children.
"Everybody who ever worked with Phil Hartman loved him. Loved him as a performer. I'm no exception." Matt Groening. I can not agree with you more Matt. I loved (still do) Phil Hartman. My favorite actor by far. Rest in Peace.

Of all the people in this wacky world who came into our lives, I think Phil was the most human. I'll never forget you, Phil... none of us will.
"Hi I'm Troy McClure. You may remember me from such driver's-ed films as Alice's Adventures through the Windshield Glass, and The Decapitation of Larry Leadfoot." Phil was my favorite and still is. I loved him on SNL, The Simpsons and News Radio. He was so funny, and he will be in our hearts forever. We miss you Phil.

I knew of Phil when he was "just an artist" and still spelled his last name with two "n"s. To see his career take off was phenomenal. I'm so glad that so much of his work lives on.
Phil was a genius. He was even hilarious way back when as Kaptain Karl on Pee-Wee's Playhouse. He was a true master of comedy. He is and will be missed for a long, long time! LONG LIVE THE SPIRIT OF PHIL!!!
I loved Phil. I just wish I had noticed his comedic genius earlier so that I could have appreciated it while he was still alive. Now I just have to watch old SNL videos or the Newsradios that are in syndication. I keep Phil in my thoughts and truly miss his presence on the screen.
phil was a great actor... i've enjoyed watching him on SNL. i grew up watching that show and he will be remembered as being a member of a legendary cast and will leave a tremendous legacy... MISS YOU SO MUCH PHIL... hope you're in heaven laughing forever!!!!!!!!
Phil, you have been my only TRUE favorite in the comedy industry. I know that no one will ever be able to fill your shoes. I still occasionally watch News Radio, but it's just not the same, sadly. Whenever I am watching the Simpsons, and I see and hear one of the characters which you have portrayed, I feel sad that there will never be any comedian like you.
Phil, you were the greatest guy ever. You were committed to everything you did. Your family, movies, tv, and everything else that you started. You will be greatly missed by all of us. Thank you for the good times. Rest in peace. You deserve that much.
A funny man who did not have a funny ending. But he always was the one to make us laugh.

I remember passing Phil in the halls in junior high school and high school in Los Angeles. Although he was in with the in-crowd and I was not, he always smiled and said hello to everyone - something not always done by others. I'll never forget his kindness. RIP, Phil.
I only just started watching News Radio, and it has become the only comedy show I would cancel everything for, purely because Phil Hartman was in it. We have sadly lost the master of comedy.

I would just like to pay my respects to a great guy who always managed to make me laugh. I hope he has a great life up in heaven- I know he deserves it.
Hello. I loved Phil Hartman. What a great man. He could always be counted on for making us laugh, cry and be filled with happiness. I was so sad when he died. Even though he was in my hometown for the longest time, I never went to see him. I remember being very sad when I heard the news, and angry. I am intending on making my memorial to my role model Phil Hartman. Keep this great site going. -Jill "Hi I'm Troy McClure. You might remember me from such films as: 1-2=negative fun! And Fireworks, the silent Killer"... "You sick bastard!"... "Phil was a great man, we shall all miss him."
Love the episode where Phil thought he was leaving (Jimmy James lost him in a poker game!) and he's hugging Matthew and saying goodbye. Then we see Matthew walking away with a "spaz" sign on his back. And remember when Bill tried to sneak past the security guards because he didn't have his pass? Wonderfull, silly stuff.

You were the quiet guy. The smart one. The most talented. The most cool. Thanks for all the laughs and great moments! Thanks for your talent, Phil!
I own a copy of "The American College Dictionary," published by Harper and Brothers in 1948. Oddly enough, the year Phil Hartman was born. As I look for the definition of the word "LEGEND," I find the following to be the most appropriate: LEGEND,... 4. a story of the life of a saint. 5. a collection of such stories. 6. a collection of stories of any admirable person. As far as I am concerned, Phil earned his wings long before his tragic and untimely demise. Much like the faces of Comedy and Tragedy, it is with both a smile and a tear that we will fondly remember you, Phil. And as I read the many tributes and reflect on my own memories, I cannot help feeling a great sense of loss. I never had the pleasure of your acquaintance and yet I, like many others, call you friend. Thank you for giving us the best years of your life. Yours was truly the stuff of Legend. Rest in peace dear friend.
Hi, my name is Kevin. I loved Phil so much. He was the best movie star. I wish he was still alive. He is still in my heart and I'll never forget him. I loved him in movies and on television, like newsradio, sgt. bilko and much more.
We loved Phil Hartmann so much! When we found out about his death we couldn't beleive it was true! We're gonna miss him so much! Phil's an angel in Heaven now! :) And all we can do is wait until we see him again. We're speaking for everyone when we say that Phil Hartmann was one of the nicest and most beautiful people who ever lived.
When Phil died I was torn because another one of my childhood heroes was dead. I had stopped watching SNL after he left. Which was only because life started getting busy. Newsradio came into place and I saw every episode. When he died I was so stricken I didn't understand. I always still find websites and hope one day I'll wake up and this will be a dream.
Few words describe the way that laughter makes us feel. In fact I can only think of two or three... but when someone is able to make us laugh then that person has the key to the door of our souls. Phil Hartman was one of those people, he held our hearts in the palm of his hand, and crushed them when he died. It's sad when anyone dies but when it's someone you look up to -- JFK, Martin Luther King, Sonny Bono, Chris Farley or Phil Hartman -- the saddness is more than you can imagine. So with that I say "Goodbye my friend, Goodbye." -Phil Hartman
Phil, you were a very funny man!!!! You are a legand set in stone, and you will always be!!!! We all miss you very much!!! I can't wait to meet you when I come to heaven!!!! Thank you for all the good times!!!!!

Wow. I couldn't believe it at first. Then I didn't want to. I started watching SNL when you were a cast member. I remember when you left the show, you and Chris Farley, I belive, did a little song that brought me to tears. You were such a brilliant person, and had so much more to offer to the world. Everyone misses you. We all have to leave sometime, but you were taken from us way too soon. I wish you could read what everyone has written about you. Some of these people are really sweet, and loved you. After SNL, I got into Newsradio, and loved your character Bill. Thank you for entertaining us like no one will ever be able to do again. I MISS YOU.

Hello, I'm Troy McClure. You may remember me from such films as... Phil Hartman will be sadly missed by all fans of the Simpsons.
Like everyone else posting here, I am still grieving for Phil. I think of him every day and say a prayer for him and for his children every night. Even after all these long months, it still seems almost impossible that he is gone. I miss him.
Even though it has been almost 8 months since his death I am still heartbroken. Like many of you, I think about him everyday and I wonder if can hear the plaintive crying of our hearts. May the higher power bless the family and especially the children he left behind. And may they someday shine as brightly as he did. "You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here, and whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding, as it should." Desiderata
Hello, Shing! Your shrine has been entered into Hartmania!, my new webpage of links to fans' works inspired by Phil. Come see! Or if you can't come, e-mail me. Happy 1999. Jesus loves you! Hartmania is at http://members.tripod.com/~MNL_1221/hartmania.html
I love the "Newsradio" episode where Phil got angry because someone kept leaving food on his desk. Or when he put up those cubicles around his work station because he wanted to be left alone. Or the episode when he tried giving up smoking and was wearing the patch. When Dave asked him how he was doing, Bill replied, "Everytime I pee it smells like an ashtray. Can you help me?" and Dave says, "I certainly hope not." Hilarious. See, thats the thing, we're all distraught over his death, and understandably so. But lets remember that Phil wouldn't want to see us sad, for he was a man who only wanted to bring joy and laughter to people. So let's at least try to remember all the fun, joyous things-Bill McNeal, Hartman's voiceover work, his SNL days, etc.
What a sweet and talented man this world has lost. I still tear up whenever I hear his name or hear his voice. His family are in my thoughts and prayers.
Phil Hartman was an incredible comedian. His passing was something that affected entertainment more than anyone will ever comprehend. I am just happy that I was around to enjoy his quick and witty humor. We should all consider ourselves lucky to have seen one of the greats in action. Maybe he's just traveling on the S.S. Sassy now.
Like everyone that has posted here I am still in shock over the death of Phil. But one way I am dealing with this is spreading his laughter around. I had to be at school on a Saturday all day. (I brought my tape of the SNL tribute.) During lunch I found a TV with a VCR and popped the tape in. Of course people had a hard time eating because they were laughing so much. I heard comments about how Phil was so funny and how it sucks that he is dead. The one that brought tears to my eyes was, "This guy must be the funniest man alive!" then her voice lowered, "Well, dead." I felt so much happiness when people enjoyed his sketches so much. I still lend tapes of NewsRadio to people. Thank you Phil. You gave us the greatest gift of all -- laughter.
I remember hearing about the passing of Phil Hartman and it was as though a member of my family or a close friend was taken away from me. Since I was about seven years old I would watch SNL, remember the best sketches of the week, go to school on Monday morning and act them out as best as I could and make the other kids as well as the teachers laugh. The feeling I got the first time they laughed is unexplainable. I am now a professional comedian and it is because of SNL that I got into this business and because of Phil Hartman that I've learned to do impressions. In the mid-eighties I saw Phil Hartman for the first time. His impressions, even when watching reruns now, are some of the best I've ever seen. When Phil Hartman left SNL and went on to film and NBC's Newsradio, the world was lucky enough to see more of his brilliance. But, perhaps there is some kid learning all of Phil's greatest sketches and making his fellow students or teachers laugh every Monday morning. He may be gone, but his comedy will live forever.
To this day I still get choked up over the untimely loss of Phil. As I write this I have tears forming in my eyes. He was my favorite comedian and always will be. I loved his skits on SNL and his role on News Radio. I just cannot believe he is gone. Phil, may you rest in peace and be assured that we will never forget you.

I wish I could have met Phil Hartman. He was one of the funniest and most talented people I've ever seen, and I hope one day I can be just like him. I guess that would be impossible.

A guy who really misses Phil
I hope you can see this, wherever you are. I sincerely miss you and what you did for everyone who ever saw you. God bless your soul.
I just wanted to say that to this day, I still cry when I see Phil Hartman's smiling face. Another senseless tragedy that has taken away someone who made me laugh, cry and entertained all of us for years. We all miss you so much Phil, may you rest in peace and know we will never forget you! My best wishes for the Hartman family, Phil was one of the greatest!
What scares me the most is that we will all forget. As the months and years roll by he will become just a fond, sweet memory. I think that that is the saddest thing of all. As long as we keep his memory and our deep love for him alive then he will never really be gone. He gave us incredible gifts from his heart. It is my hope that we learned something from the way he lived, loved and laughed. Maybe we can make this world a better place after all. RIP dear sweet Phil, I will never ever forget you.
I'm 15 yrs. old and I grew up watching Phil Hartman from SNL & The Simpsons, to his movies, to NewsRadio which I've been watching since I was in 6th grade when it first aired. When I heard that Phil Hartman had died on the news I immediately began crying. It's like something about the whole world has changed with his death. Everything's different. No celebrity's death has ever affected me this way before, and I'm still not quite over it. I think there was something about him that reached out to people, something in his personality that let people in and made people love him, not by knowing him but just by wanting him around. He will be missed very much and I hope to God his kids will be okay in time.

Such a sweet face will be never be forgotten. Thank you Phil, over and again, for showing me what genuine laughter is. You'll always be "Apple-Cheeks Phil" in my heart, and I'll never stop wishing that happy, glowing face was still here. Rest in peace and know that we love you very, very much.

I remember that episode with Susan Dey. I saw it about 5 days after he died. When they showed the close-up of him with tears running down his face and pure happiness that his daughter was born, I was on the verge of tears. It was so touching, how much he cared about his kids. He was one of my favorite comedians and I miss him very much. Rest in peace Phil.

To all Phil's friends, we send our grateful thanks for your show of love and support for his Mother, Sean and Birgen and other family members. He was so special and it was a privilege having him for my brother for almost 50 years.
Phil Hartman was to me the greatest comedian of this generation. He made many laugh at the simplest things and enjoy life. He made me laugh out loud and not that many people can truly do that. I will miss him and always remember how he gave me and many other people a wonderful look at life, through his comedy.
I love the Simpsons episode where Homer gets trapped in a phone booth, and Lionel Hutz comes by and says, "Hey! Get out of my office!" I miss Phil so much.
When Phil Hartman passed away, it was a terrible loss to all obviously, but to me very much. Now, I didn't feel like I knew him, because the only Phil I saw was what I read about, or saw on tv. But the loss to me is great amounts of laughter that he could have kept providing for years to come. Phil always has been, and always will be, my co-favorite SNL cast member, the other being John Belushi. It is very sad but very true that the greats die WAY too young, before their time. R.I.P. Phil........
Although it's been several months, it's still unbelievable that Phil is gone. What a tragedy...I've tried to enjoy "News Radio" this season, but unfortunately, it's just not the same. My hope is that Phil's family reads these messages, and finds some comfort in the fact that his genius is still missed. May he rest in peace.
Phil Hartman was an inspiration to me. I am an actor and have modeled my comedy skills after him. He was my favorite saturday night live cast member and voice on the simpsons. i will miss hearing his hilarious voices.
I first saw Phil Hartman on SNL, during his last season. He was always one of my favorite performers. I absolutely loved his character of Bill McNeal. He was a wonderful human being, and he will be missed. His family, particularly his children are in my prayers.

Phil was a great comedian, my favorite actually. I first saw him on NewsRadio in late 1997, then I eventually saw a lot of his SNL stuff. When he died, I thought to myself that this is impossible, how? Why Phil? Another passed star I loved was Chris Farley, whose overweight body and wacky movements made me laugh.

Phil and I were friends in grade school. Even at that age, he could do a dead-on impression of Adlai Stevenson; you'd wet your pants. I was attracted first to Phil because he said he was an alien. Years later I discovered that he meant he was from Canada. "Gee Ma, I want to go-back to Ontario, Gee Ma, I want to go home." His favorite song in the fourth grade! He also alleged that he hated rock & roll.
Jingle All the Way is where we first saw Phil. We will never forget the line that we kept repeating after we saw it, "Oh, these cookies!" We miss you Phil and we hope that you are happy where ever you are.
Phil Hartman was a wonderful actor and comedian. I love watching him. It is a tragedy that the world has lost such a spectacular person. I wish the best for his children.
Phil Hartman brought the world a lot of laughs, on NewsRadio, the Simpsons and lots of movies. He spent a few years on SNL and just kept going. There are a lot of things you could say about Phil Hartman so I'll just say one, he was a good man. He will be missed.
Phil was the best comedian out there. He will be missed by myself and the rest of the world. He has added more comedy to the world and he can never be replaced (sniffle). I'll miss you Phil, I hope that where ever you are now you are happy...
Goodbye Phil, you will be missed. Thank you for all your wonderful and hilarious characters. I will forever miss Bill McNeal, Troy McClure, Lionel Hutz, Frankenstein and of course Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer.
My heart is broken and the greatest comedian of our generation is gone. I will miss Phil Hartman forever and will always remember the tragic day we heard the news he was gone.

His death was a tragedy, there just aren't enough good souls in the world that we can afford to lose one so precious. His compassion, congeniality and comedic talent were his gift to us. Holding his memory in our hearts with respect and gratitude should be our gift to him. May God bless his family - especially his mother and his children. From our hearts to yours, All our hopes....

Phil Hartman was a great comedian. Yes he was the man a thousand voices -- to me a million. And he was my favorite comedian as well as actor. I loved his voice work on the simpsons as troy mcclure and lionel hutz. And his harsh but funny Bill McNeal character on Newsradio. We must not forget Phil Hartman, actor, comedian, writer, husband and father. I promised Phil I would get a tattoo of his face his canadian flag and his name tattooed somewhere on my body. R.I.P. Philip Edward Hartman
Phil made me start watching snl and newsradio, and neither show will ever be the same without him. Thanks for all the laughs and I'll never forget you.

He had not even begun to live up to his full potential. Imagine Phil playing Oliver Wendall Douglas in the up coming "Green Acres" movie. Phil would have been perfect playing the uptight, flustered, upper class New Yorker who gives up a successful law career to run a broken down old farm, and then has to deal with a bunch of lovable rural eccentrics. Wherever he is, I hope Phil realizes how much we all loved him. Forgive me for sounding repetitive, but as so many others have said, we have not just lost a brilliant comedian, we have also lost a friend. Goodbye Phil.

Why did he have to wait to die to receive an emmy nomination for "Newsradio?" He created a character that was so complex - arrogant yet vulnerable. Yet no matter how many nasty things Bill did, Hartman made the character lovable. Only an extraordinarily gifted comic actor such as he could have pulled it off.
Even the death of Phil Hartman touched me, and I think it touched alot of people. But when I heard at school we had to do a project on famous Canadians guess who I picked - "Phil Hartman" May you rest in peace!

You were one of the funniest people on this earth, absolutely funny in every show. May you rest in peace.
Hi there. I hadn't heard of Phil Hartman very long at the time of His death. It had only been four years (1994). But, I think I had seen Him several times before. I think the entertainment industry is quite empty without Him. I think He would have played a perfect Jack Benny in a biographical movie. I think He was too funny in "Jingle all the way." One could only hope there's a place for deceased comedians to meet. Such as: A cocktail party where guys like Lou Costello, John Belushi, Lenny Bruce, and Phil standing around drinking, Divine would do some burlesque dancing, and Maybe Ed Sullivan would host the party. I certainly will miss Phil.
I still can't believe Phil is gone. It seems like I miss him more each day. Even though I never met him, he was like a best friend. I grew up with Phil- I never missed him on SNL. He never failed to make me laugh, even when I was down. He was such an outrageously funny and talented man. No one ever has or ever will compare to Phil Hartman. He was the greatest. Phil, we love you and will never forget you.
If Life had been a little kinder, today Phil would have sighed, smiled, and shaken his head as he cut the cake on his 50th birthday -- a milestone all of us Baby Boomers must face. But since that can't be, I imagine that he gets an enormous cake in his favorite flavor in heaven -- and the audience roars as he whips off quips. Happy birthday, Phil! I'll never stop thinking of you and thanking you for the laughter. I miss you so. @--,--`---
22Sept98 - It's been nearly four months since Phil's tragic, untimely death. And yet here on the near-anniversary of his birth, I am as saddened as ever. What a terrible loss we all have had. But thank heavens for VCRs -- in there, Bill McNeal, the Frozen Caveman Lawyer, Troy McClure and many more will live on for a long time to come. Comedy is not low, base, nor simple; it is a beautiful, complex creation. It's the roses of the garden, thorned and sweet; the Northern lights of the night sky, colorful and changing; the rainbow after a gloomy day. Thanks for this touching web page. And thank _you_, Phil, for all the laughs. Happy birthday! Have a rose, a rainbow, and a wide-sky view of the Northern lights. Heaven is surely a happier, funnier place with you there.
Phil was an innovative genius. His talent was a cut above any other cast member on SNL. He will be remembered as a brilliant artist who changed the lives of millions of his fans and the face of comedy itself.
Write to him at NewsRadio anyway. Say what you wanted to say to him. The others will appreciate it. You can visit my website at members.tripod.com/~MNL_1221/index.html. God bless.
The death of Phil Hartman still haunts me everyday. I have never cried for someone so much before in my life. He was the funniest and best-looking character on NewsRadio, and he was the best looking man on this earth. I will miss him terribly forever. Thank you for making us laugh and cry all those years Phil. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. @---;--- ~Jessica~
I'd just like to know if there's something wrong with me, because I've never grieved this long over the death of someone (not even family!). Man, I was so close to writing him, too--because we had both recently lost loved ones to Alzheimer's Disease. Anyway, this month he would have turned 50, and I still haven't totally gotten over what happened.
All the best to Phil's children and relatives. He shall be missed. Visit The Heart Man - Tribute to Phil Hartman on Planet Izzy at http://www.planetizzy.com/hartman.html.
I am an actor and I write plays. I am twelve years old and hope I will be just as funny as Phil Hartman, Dan Aykroyd, and Steve Martin combined when I am older. Phil was one of my heroes... and still is.
I still cannot get over it. Why does his death haunt me so? I think he touched us all so deeply because he was such a pure man and so very kind. He loved life, his kids, his work and most of all healing us through his comedic talents. How I wish there was someway to go back and warn him. I keep thinking that maybe if he hadn't have taken that cold medicine that night that maybe made
him drowsy, he might have woke up in time. I look up at the stars at night now and wonder if he is there. I see a beautiful sunset and wonder if he has become part of it. I truly believe that his soul is now part of something much much bigger than we could ever imagine. And it makes me smile to know that someday I will get to meet him. In some strange way that makes me fear death less. "Summer winds, that embrace me just as surely kissed your face. Ah these miss you nights, they're the longest....."

I am left speechless. The author of this page summed it up best. When he died, and still, my sadness was and STILL IS so great, I can't cry. I'm just shocked. I think all fans will agree no other actor was so pure and true. No other actor has ever LOVED to make anyone laugh so much many comedians take it as a "job" it was his life. It's been a while. Yet I am still just as hurt as the day he died. I was going through old newspapers, and was devastated to see a local paper dated "May 28th". He was the funniest man of all time. One of my favorite cast members. Gone.
I still cannot believe it. I have never laughed harder then when I was watching Phil. Such talent. Such a loss. I didn't personally know him, but I feel like I lost a part of me. I've shaped my abs from laughing so hard! I feel like I lost a friend. He never let an audience down... here I go rambling on. It just can't do justice to this terrible loss. The world has lost a great. Funniest man on earth, Phil Hartman. 1949-1998.
I'm from Ontario - near the city where Phil was born. It's one thing to lose a local citizen from a car accident or something of the kind; but to lose a hero is something so different. Many funny people come from Canada, but I'll always remember Phil Hartman as the funniest.
I think it's a real tragedy what happen to Mr. Phil Hartman, he was a great actor/comedian and he will be greatly missed. I wish his children the best of luck in life. Goodbye.
Although it's been almost two months since Phil's passing, i still cannot control the tears that creep down my face as i watch snl reruns or movies with Phil... i always hoped to someday be able to make people laugh as Phil did... he was my mentor and my hero... it makes my heart ache to think we will no longer be graced with his beautiful face and charming personality... (not counting reruns)... goodbye sweet Phil... your life helped make me a better person... i only wish it wasn't over so soon... i love you... em
Phil was a man of class, as well as humor. I appreciate all of humor displayed through various characters. I will miss him. I live within sight of Hartman St. Black ribbons are seen tied around all the street signs. It is my private tribute.
It is such a senseless loss when one is wrenched violently from the loving arms of humanity. Our hearts and souls ache for the children, who cannot possibly make any sense out of this and for those of us who will laugh a lot less..... You will be sorely missed, Phil Hartman.............
This is the best page yet. I also loved Phil Hartman. I've seen all of his movies and most of his SNL shows. I was in new york when i heard that he was killed and i felt lonely when i heard that. he was funny in jingle all the way and Sgt. Bilko. I'm not very religious either. May god bless his family and friends and chris farley's family and friends.
"Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road. Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go. So make the best of this test, and don't ask why. It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time. It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right. I hope you had the time of your life. So take the photographs, and still frames in your mind. Hang it on shelf of good health and good time. Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial. For what it's worth, it was worth all the while. I hope you had the time of your life."
A fine person left us. I did not know him personally, but I think he was as great as the shows give out. The world will never be the same without him. I hope he has rest where he is now. Miss you Phil see you some day
Phil Hartman was one of the funniest guys EVER... he made News Radio my fav sitcom on TV today!!!!! I went out and re rented Houseguest just so I could listen to that bit he and Sinbad sing during the closing credits... I listened to it repeatedly... He will be missed forever... I hope he is happy in heaven.
I have never really felt close to an actor but when I found out that he died early that morning my heart went through the floor. I was almost in tears. It felt like my best friend had died, but if you think about it a close friend did die. Knowing that he want be there to make us laugh just turns my world up side down. I know my life must go on. We love you Phil and my God bless you. We know that you are up there making God laugh his head off even as we speak. So long old friend, We will truly miss you.
What a lovely tribute page. The announcement of his daughter's birth at the end of a show is one of my strongest memories of him, too. He stepped back, choking back tears, embarrassed at the personal attention . . . . he had to be a professional at work while his wife was giving birth. It's not getting any easier and it's the murder that has made that so. Rest in peace, Phil and Brynn Hartman. God bless your children's lives.
My mind is still trying to comprehend this unspeakable tragedy! Phil Hartman always made me laugh and there were many times I thought about writing to him and letting him know that his comedy was appreciated. Instead, I'm sitting at my computer trying to find words that the man himself will never be able to see. My heart aches for his children and family.
I've never really felt this sad over the death of a star before. I even cried. Somehow it feels like I lost a really close friend. Phil was truly something else. I loved his Saturday Night Live days and the impressions that he did during them. I mean, come on, who could ever forget Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer huh! I never really watched Newsradio, but I just saw one last night and Phil cracked me up. He was really funny. Phil, wherever you are, I miss you so much and I'm sure that a lot of other people did too. You left us too early. Well, I hope you are up in heaven having a blast with Chris, Gilda, and John. I'll see you when I get there, weather it be today, tomorrow, or most likely 70 years from now. You are truly unforgettable and we will miss you deeply. Rest in Peace!
I had the honor of calling Phil a friend. We corresponded for 11 years and I will and do miss him so much. RIP Phil! Nobody could do Nicholson for me like you did.
Most often during times like this, the sadness and shock is so great many find it hard to express themselves and, in vain, search for the right words to say. But, sometimes silence is the best answer, and grief can be shared without saying a word. And in this silence I thank Phil for all the great times, and I send a prayer to his children. Go with God, my friend.
I have to agree with others that this is a very sweet tribute page and a most appropriate sanctuary for those wishing to share their thoughts and memories of Phil Hartman. I have never participated in anything like this before, but I felt overwhelmingly moved to pay my respects to Phil Hartman for his life and his work and to express my grief over losing him. I was so stunned by the news and nature of his death that it took a couple of days for it to sink in. I am heartsick. Most of us may not have known Mr. Hartman personally, but I for one just enjoyed knowing that he was on the planet. I became aware of him when he joined SNL, and since then, have had a great affection for the man and his work. I had become accustomed to his presence everywhere over the years, so much so, that I guess I took him for granted, never expecting that he would be taken out of this life so early and in such a heartbreaking way. I was always pleased to find him on TV or in films and to hear his voice on the radio, and his SNL and NewsRadio
work always made me laugh -- hard. Phil made everything he touched that much more special. In a world in such sore need of lightness and laughter, the loss of his brilliance is profound, and my heart has not stopped aching since I heard of his murder. And I know that, if the loss is this terrible for his fans, it must be unbearable for those who had the pleasure of knowing him personally, certainly not the least of which are his children, and my prayers go out to them. As profound as this loss is, I hope we can all reach a point where Phil Hartman's legacy of exceptional talent, warmth, kindness and humor are not eclipsed by the tragedy of his death, for that would just compound the loss. Phil, if you're listening, I miss you; we all do. Thank you for the laughter and the memories, and know that we will always remember you. I hope you are at peace and that you know how much you meant to so many. The world will be a darker place without you. Goodbye and Godspeed.
All I can say is that he made me laugh. He thought his purpose in life was just that, to make people laugh. Well, he fulfilled his purpose. Above and beyond, I would say. It seems so many of the best comedians have met tragic deaths. They have hard lives, always having to be funny. Always playing their parts. Mr. Hartman is where ever people go when they die, still making people laugh. Goodbye, Mr. Hartman. We loved you and, thanks to the magic of TV and Movies, we'll love you for a long time to come. You'll never be forgotten.
What a true blessing this website is. In a crazy cruel world we live in, what a true blessing and gift we had in Phil Hartman. The gift of laughter is very very rare, and he had it like it was second nature. He made me laugh so hard, I always was doubling over in tears. Many comics, unfortunately, nowadays, go for the profanity for humor. I, too, felt like this guy was a personal friend of mine. I hope now, in his ring-side seat in heaven, he knows what joy and
laughter he brought to so many hearts. As a mother, my prayers and thoughts will continually go out to his children. God bless...
Like many others, I never "claimed" to actually knowing him nor did I ever have the extreme pleasure of meeting up close or attend the tapings of 'NewsRadio' but watching him work made me feel like I actually knew him while laughing at the same time. I especially enjoyed his small roles on 'The Simpsons' (he played screen idol Troy McClure and the somewhat rat-like attorney Lionel Hutz for those of you who don't know and let's face everybody does)! Phil was the kind of guy who could really brighten your day with one glance. And I'm sure he would be honored by all this appreciation from people who may or may not be his biggest fans. So Phil, wherever you may be, thanks for all the good times that you brought us, but most of all, thanks for the laughs. You will be greatly missed by all whether or not they knew you (myself included)!
Although never having had the privilege of meeting him, his personality shone through in all his work. For anyone to die at the hands of someone else is tragic, for it to be at the hands of a family member makes it all the more tragic. I cant express, or understand the depth of feelings that I am having about Phil's passing, however it makes me even more convinced to make every day count
I would just like to say that this is a wonderful page and a fantastic tribute to one of comedy's greats. When I first heard about his untimely and tragic death, I cried my eyes out. Then when I came to this page, I cried them out all over again. Phil, if there's any way you can know what I've written here, please know that you are much loved and admired for your genius, and your warmth as a compassionate human being who made sure his kids had everything they needed. Now, that has been taken away. Rest in peace, Phil.
Well, I feel extremely foolish because the entries dated before Jun 3 have been lost to file corruption, and I'm not quite sure how... In a way it is a good thing that, at least only about a weeks' worth of messages was lost, but it's terrible because it was the first week after May 28, 1998, when many countless Phil fans posted their messages. If anyone happened to have downloaded the page before the crash and wants to send me the original posts, please email me and I will restore this. Otherwise, guess this is all. We'll never forget you, Phil.
