you were saturday night live for several years!! i still hear your voice in commercials on radio and it gives me a chill, long live the "ANAL RETENTIVE FISHERMAN, HOUSE HUSBAND, ETC! YOU WILL ALWAYS BE A MEMORY TO MY FAMILY, ESPECIALLY AS LONG AS SNL IS AROUND! REST IN PEACE PHIL!
Mr. hartman, thank you for every smile, every laughter, every joy in my heart, and even for the tears that poured out from the deepest of my soul when i knew you were gone, because they've made me realized that only a man like you can show that the pain and sadness of a loss doesn't matter, what really matters it's all the good things, fond memories and unforgetable laughters that are left in my heart and in my memories, thank you, may you be in god's holy glory
I'm sorry I'm late, I dropped my pockets along the way...
I got quite a bit lost looking for them, but I found the keys to somebody's car. That's when everything went bad.
Everytime I found a car to fit the keys, I didn't have any pockets to reach into for them!
I heard a an yell for help down the street. I ran to him and asked if I could help. He asked for a cell phone, because his car had just been stolen.
I am happy to tell you that I am a man of great tidings! I had no cell phone or $12,000 for the misfortuned man's stolen 1997 Honda, but I happily provided him with a shiney, BMW-looking type of key ring!!
Just to make it all that much better, I said, "Won't that make Charolette scream the lungs right outa' her?!"

Phil Hartman was even a frequent guest voice on the Ren & Stimpy Show.
When i was 4 i got the chicken pox, i couldnet sleep because of the itching, so i stayed up late and watched tv. Nothing was on so i thought i'd turn to NBC(they never let me down) guess what was on; Saturday Night Live. I had never seen Saturday night live before so it was a truley special expeareace, i noticed that Phil Hartmans portrail of Clinton was what got me through most of the night. And that night was posably one of the moments that got me interested in comedy, i my self wish someday to make it on to Saturday Night Life for my future carrer. so for that I thank him.
Dear Phil,
I met you in '94, in NY. I told you you were my inspiration and I meant it -- without flirtation. Thanks for unfrozen, for Frankenstein, for Sassy, and I will always wonder if you and Jan Hooks should have gotten together. Oh, and I finally got to see your SNL audition. Man, were you good, adn you're still my inspiration.
Peace, and love,
B

Phil hartman was a man that I looked up to. Even today there has not been one actor comedian that can compare to him. I miss hearing his voice on the simpsons and seeing him on tv. Even though he is gone I still consider him a role model. Thanks for the laughs and you will always be in my heart.
Phil was simply a comic genius. His voice alone (Simpsons!) made me laugh so hard it would bring tears to my eyes......When I feel down, I think of 'unfrozen caveman lawyer'....Thanks Phil.
Phil Hartman was one of the funniest men in the world I belive, he could make me laugh even when i was having a really crappy day. I miss him very much, just his presence on screen and tv. Phil I miss you with all my heart, R.I.P.
Phil, I can't believe that you're dead, and you died after finshing up voice work in the wonderful Kiki's Delivery Service, boy what an end to years of making movies, just wish that you didn't die. But I hope you are resting in peace.

I too was wondering why Jon Lovitz took over and then I found out. I loved him as a actor. I have grown up with him and loved him and laughed with him

I live in Venezuela and only recently i have cable, so i never saw him while he was alive, i inmediately fell in love with his character in Newsradio and couldn`t understand why he went off the show and then Jon Lovitz came on, it`s not that Jon isnt fine but Bill McNeall is only one, i was shocked and saddened when i found out in E entertainment of his death, they all die so young....
To say that Phil Hartman was an incredibly talented actor and comedian would be a vast understatement, for he was so much more. He was a genuinely good person, true to friends and fans alike. Whenever we think of Phil, we will always remember the good times we had, and how he could always make us laugh, or put a smile on our face no matter what. I believe that we were truly blessed to have Phil Hartman. He will be truly missed, but never forgotten. Salude, sir.
i just saw "the best of phil hartman" and i found out what a funny guy he was. I wish that he were still alive almost as much as i feel about Cris Farley. I may have been too young to know about the death when it happened but i can still admire his memory.
I never met Phil. I really wish i had. People always say that you appreciate people when there dead more then when there alive. not true. Every Year sence his passing i have missed his talent and the laughter that poured out of him every second. May 28 is the one day of the year that i dont smile. WE MISS YOU PHIL, YOU WERE ONE HELL OF A GUY
I believe phil can fly
i believe phil can touch the sky
i think of phil every night and day
put on he's socks and fly away
Hail Phil !
ps rest in peace Phil Hartman
Dear people who love Phil Hartman,
I'm a long-time fan of Phil.
I also work as an activist for human rights and alternatives for people in the mental health system.
I haven't had any way to talk to people about the connection between these two things for years, so thanks for this guestbook.
Of course, we can't predict what any change might lead to, as science knows from the "butterfly effect."
But I wonder... What if... What if... there was a real range of humane, common sense alternatives available for people in trouble.... What if our culture challenged the DOMINATION of psychiatric drugs (and I'm not disrespecting those who choose psychiatric drugs, just questioning the DOMINATION of this apprach today)... What if we as a society addressed mental and emotional well being and crises at least as confidently as we address, say, energy conservation, jobs, housing, and other issues.
Supposedly our society treats celebrities like royalty.
But suppose we treated everyone equally, including celebrities, and they too had access to a wide range of help when their family was in trouble?
What if we all questioned the price of relying so heavily on psychiatric drugs as the answer?
Thanks for letting me ask these questions, everyone. I haven't had a place to ask them, and I appreciate it.
Phil, the joke will be on the oppression that keeps our society from talking about these things openly... I hope you will have the last laugh -- a good caring laugh -- as freedom, justice, equality, human right, empowerment and self-determination emerge.
Your art is appreciated and will be appreciated, thank you.

Phil Hartman was a kind man. We were family friends and his death was tragic. It was very difficult to explain to my son.

Phil, I gues the greatest tribute to you might be the fact that Tuesday Feb. 24, 2004 the "SNL Best of Phil Hartman" DVD FINALLY came out and every store in town is sold out. I have never seen this happen in my three years of buying DVD's. I guess I'll just have to have Amazon.com send it to me....but I can't wait! I miss you Phil...but when I get your DVD it will be watched again and again and again...
Phil was great, I'll kiss him, he was the man and he was the cool

What can be said about Phil that hasn't been said before. I remember him most from his Ed McMahon immitation - "You are correct, Sir" while sitting with Dana Carvey (Johhny Carson) on a beach barefooted in those beach chairs sipping drinks (of course, the Clinton gags go without saying). It always puts a smile on my face...even now as I am writting this. Phil, you are truly missed and always will be. It's been almost six years now since you left, but the memory remains as strong as ever. Thank you for the laughs.
I have watched Saturday Night Live since its first episode, and Phil Hartman was my all-time favorite performer. His death was tragic, certainly. But as sad as I feel about it, the proof of his talent is that I can still think of his SNL characters and laugh. I'll always remember him.
By coincidence I came across this site. It immediately struck me reminding the great loss all of us received. If I should hear his voice on the Simpsons it has a chilling effect. It is someone who should still be here laughing and making us laugh as well. The exact same observation ont he front page also moved me as well. I remember it vividly so I understand the author as well. I also recall Susan being affected by his facial response. From someone who is a great comedian this was a very genuine personal moment. Phil is the kind of guy you suspect of being a real good person. This only verified it. Notice I wrote "is" because he still lives on. He has touched us all and this site and my memory underlines this. I never met him but was shocked and upset in a unique way. This is someone who I felt I knew and realized the loss very quickly after the shock of the nature of the death. I hope his kids can cope with this. You can be proud of your father. What a tragedy altogether. Phil I will pray for your kids and hope to meet you in heaven. Take care all of you!Goodbye.
I still remember sitting in a train at 5am in the morning going to work when I heard the news about his passing. And even though the world was robbed of a great comedian with an impeccable sense of comic timing (not to mention a voice actor), it's great to see his work still being syndicated across the planet. I cannot think of a better testament to such a talented guy ... I know this is one fan that won't forget. And the best thing is I ain't alone in that sentiment.
On one of the episodes of News Radio, Dave read a text to the employees from Bill Mcneal. If anyone has the words that Dave used (supposedly this was from Bill) could you please send it to me. At one time it was on the Internet but has been replaced.
I am writing from a very far and little country just to prove once more and show how wide in the world Phill spread his talent and carismatic personality. I am sure He is checking this from the place He is now, so I know He will be happy to confirm how many people admire him and love him all around the world. Phill, you are among the best comediants ever, thank you for all the fun you still give to us.
Hello everyone: i just want to say that i did not know Phil Hartman although he was my cousin. Some people may think that i am not telling the truth but really i am...when i heard about this devistating news i was so upset becasue this is a person that was related to me and i never met him. It was a very horrible thing that happened and Phil will always be forevery missed.
Rest in Peace

His death was such a tradgedy, it shouldn't have happened. He was a very talented Canadian actor. I remember him from "The Simpsons" as Lionel Hutz and Troy Mcclure, from Newradio as the arrogant Bill McNeal and of course from SNL as many wonderful characters. He will always be missed
everyone has said what a great guy you are and i agree, you made us all laugh, i remember you best from the simpsons, you were so funny, so all i can say is "have a beer for me" take care wherever you are.
Whenever anyone asks me who my favorite emtertainers are, Phil Hartman is always on the list. An absolute comic genius, Phil will always be with us in our happy memories of laughter. I think anyone that has seen Phil's work knows and appreciates how talented he was. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to appreciate his work, and to be able to enjoy it today thru reruns and tapes. All the best to his friends and family. Thank you Phil, you are greatly missed!
Sad to learn the man who made us laugh in many diferent ways and from him we found that sides can actually split. Many thanks to Matt for creating this site, obviously Phil had you roaring with laughter as well as the millions of others around the world. "Hi, I'm Troy McClure - you may remember from such educational films as Lead paint delicious but deadly and Here comes the metric system!" Absolute class, love you Phil you will always live in hearts.
Feelings and kind regards to all his family and friends.
Phil Hartman was my favorite comedian of the modern age. His Saturday Night Live skits and his cowriting of "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" exude an epic brilliance.
Phil's work was jaw-droppingly amazing. The entire comedic world owes him a ton. When I heard he passed, I channeled his SNL frankenstein....AAARRRRRGGGGHH! RIP
It was quite a shock; always is when it's someone close to you, or someone so gifted they've become part of your, and many other peoples', lives. I'll miss him every time I think of him. But, I'll be glad he came, and gave of himself; and I'll try to follow that example.
I can't believe that Phil is gone for good. That really upsets me! He is always on TV so, I natually thought that he was still alive and well. I'm will morn his death 4-ever
This sad event has crossed my mind countless times. Lets be honest, this event was very different than John Belushi or Gilda Radner. Anyone that knows what happened and cared in some way for Phil, must be harboring some anger as well as a feeling of loss. I know I do. The memory of Phil Hartman will live on through SNL repeats, movies like "House Guest", and in the hearts of people like us. Phill, wherever you are, WE MISS YOU!

My real name is unimportant, instead focus on what I write. Phil Hartman's death has only grown sadder with the roll of years. I remember hearing the reports of his death with great sadness, and I knew that this man I so idolized was returned to the angels. Phil Hartman, you are probably the best actor I have ever seen, and I feel that will never change. Perhaps I will lose some memories of your accomplishments as I approach my own fate, but I feel there is a part of me that will always love you. The scene within entertainment is sadder without him, but I hope, especially given his irrevocable nature of giving of himself and the harsh, pointless nature of his death, that he is not as his Bill Evelyne McNeal character, always seeming to possess a longing for something he never found, but, rather, as I imagined he was in his life: at peace. He's earned it. And to the creator of this book, bravo.

I'd just like to add that it's Phil's birthday tomorrow (the 24th) and I'd like everyone to take a minute to honor the late great Phil Hartman. Thanks everybody. And thank you Phil.
John Ritter's untimely death has also brought me back to rememberance of Phil. It's sad when another entertainer's life is cut short, and the pain keeps coming of wondering what Phil could be doing now. Phil, I hope you're resting in peace. Thanks again.
NEWSRADIO IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SITCOM SHOWS I'VE EVER SEEN ON T.V. AND PHIL HARTMAN IS THE HEART AND SOUL OF IT.
ALSO IN SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE HE'S BENN GREAT IN MOST OF THE SKETCHES HE HAS BEEN MADE IT. AND HIS VOICE IS REALLY PECULIAR
AND FUNNY FOR THIS AND MORE HE'S ONE OF MY GREATEST SITCOM HEROES.
Maybe it is the passing of John Ritter, another heartwarming comic, that made me think of Phil Hartman today. He was a part of our life and keeping his memory alive is a way to honor him. Thank you for this site!

Every time I watch old SNL episodes, I am reminded of how funny you were. you are missed!
I was just seaching up on the cast of 3rd Rock Fromt he Sun and his name came up and I went, "Oh, he was on the Simpsons a lot!" so I clicked on it and it said, 'The late Pihl Hartman, who was murdered during the last 2 seasons of the show...' I couldn't beleive it! He was such a great man, he played so many voices on the Simpsons and many other great shows! I hope people remember him...
On May 28th I had a bad feeling in my stomach. It was the same feeling I've had the past five years. I can't believe it's been that long. It is still difficult to cope with the loss of Phil. It took me almost two weeks to post this here. It wasn't because I couldn't, or forgot, but for I am at a loss of words in remembering Phil. I don't have to brag how good he was because we all know. I just want people to remember him and enjoy what he had to offer in his shortened life. Please continue to cherish the memory of Phil in every SNL, The Simpsons, and NewsRadio re-run you see. I'd like to thank you again Phil. R.I.P.

Many thanks Phil for the great laughs you have given the world.
Phil Hartman, you were funny as hell. Your Frank Sinatra impersonation was brilliant! May you Rest in Peace, Phil. You will always be missed but will always be remembered.
Now I'm remembering about you in Japan. In 1998, I was in California as a foreign student. I was watching your NewsRadio every day. You are the greatest comedian I ever seen. I left USA after one year of the day. Now I am forgetting English because I donft have any chance to speak with English speakers. But I will never forget how great you are! RIP or Rebirth in Japan!
